Morocco tour From Tangier in 12 days

Day 1: Tangier = Tetouan = Chefchaouen "The Blue City"

Our professional driver/guide will meet you at your Tangier accommodation or port/airport to begin our journey. We head east along the Mediterranean coast toward Tetouan, enjoying panoramic sea views near Ceuta (Sebta). Upon arrival in Tetouan, set at the foot of the Rif Mountains, we will explore its UNESCO-listed Medina—celebrated for its unique Hispano-Moorish architecture, white-washed buildings, and traditional artisan quarters. After enjoying lunch and driving past the coastal port of Capo Negro, we continue through scenic mountain roads to Chefchaouen. Check into your hotel or Riad, then spend the evening relaxing at Plaza Uta El-Hammam, admiring the red-walled Kasbah and vibrant street cafes.

Day 2: Chefchaouen = Volubilis = Meknes = Fes

Begin your morning wandering the tranquil, blue-painted alleyways and colorful artisan markets of Chefchaouen before departing south. Our first stop is Volubilis, Morocco’s best-preserved ancient Roman archaeological site. Explore its towering triumphs, ancient basilicas, and remarkably intact floor mosaics with a local expert guide. Next, drive to the nearby imperial city of Meknes. Here, we stop to photograph the grand Bab Mansour gate, visit the historic Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, and admire the massive royal granaries at Sahrij Swani. In the late afternoon, we journey through the rolling agricultural hills of the Saiss plain to Fes, arriving in time to settle into your traditional Riad.

Day 3: Full Day in Fes "The Cultural & Spiritual Capital"

Immerse yourself in a full-day guided exploration of Fes, the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities. We start with a visit to the Golden Gates of the Royal Palace, followed by panoramic city views from the historic Marinid Tombs. Next, step into Fes el-Bali (the old Medina), a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s largest car-free urban area. Walk through the vibrant spice souks, visit the historic Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University (founded in 859 AD), admire the intricate tilework of Bou Inania Medersa, and observe the traditional leather-dyeing process at the famous Chouara Tannery. End your afternoon visiting a local pottery and mosaic cooperative before returning to your Riad.

Day 4: Fes = Ifrane = Midelt = Ziz Valley = Merzouga Desert

Depart early from Fes, climbing into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop is Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine-style architecture and tidy parks. We then drive through the ancient cedar forests of Azrou, where you can spot wild Barbary macaques in their natural habitat. Continue over the scenic Zad Pass to Midelt for lunch. In the afternoon, descend through the dramatic Ziz Gorge and along the vast Ziz Valley, stopping to take photos of millions of date palms stretching across the desert canyon. By late afternoon, reach the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga for a warm welcome with traditional mint tea at your desert lodge.

Day 5: Full Sahara Desert Experience & Sunset Camel Trek

Dedicate the entire day to exploring the culture and natural marvels surrounding Erg Chebbi. Drive 4×4 across the desert trail to meet a nomadic Berber family living in traditional woven tents, gaining insight into their daily life and hospitality. Next, visit the desert village of Khamlia, where you will enjoy a live performance of spiritual Gnawa music played by local musicians descended from sub-Saharan ancestors. Explore the abandoned lead and mineral mines at M’Fis before heading back for lunch. In the late afternoon, climb atop your camel for a trek across the golden dunes, stopping to witness a breathtaking Saharan sunset. Arrive at your luxury desert camp, enjoy a traditional dinner, and gather around the campfire for Berber drumming and stargazing.

Day 6: Merzouga = Rissani = Todra Gorges = Dades Valley

Wake up early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the desert dunes before enjoying breakfast at camp. After returning by camel or 4×4 to Merzouga, we drive to Rissani, the historic origin of the reigning Alaouite dynasty. Stroll through its traditional souk (especially lively on market days) and explore its ancient fortified ksars. We then travel west toward Tinghir, arriving at the dramatic Todra Gorges. Walk between the sheer 300-meter-high red limestone cliffs carved out by the Todra River, a favorite spot for rock climbers and nature lovers. Afterward, continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the green Dades Valley, famous for its weirdly shaped rock formations known as the “Monkey Fingers.”

Day 7: Dades Valley = Rose Valley = Ouarzazate = Ait Ben Haddou = Marrakech

After breakfast, drive through the scenic Rose Valley (Kelaat M’Gouna), famous for its annual rose harvest and organic cosmetic production. Continue through the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa.” Visit the historic Taourirt Kasbah and drive past the famous Atlas Film Studios. Next, stop at the legendary Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage site featured in films like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Explore its fortified earthen towers with a local guide. In the afternoon, cross the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m elevation), enjoying breathtaking mountain vistas before descending into Marrakech.

Day 8: Full Day in Marrakech "The Red City"

Embark on a comprehensive full-day tour of Marrakech with an official local guide. Discover the rich history of the city starting at the magnificent Bahia Palace, renowned for its painted ceilings and lush courtyards, followed by the 16th-century Saadian Tombs and the towering minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque. Walk through the bustling, colorful souks in the Medina, where artisans craft leather, metalwork, and carpets. In the afternoon, visit the serene Majorelle Garden, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent, and admire its striking cobalt-blue architecture and exotic plant collections. Finish your day at the iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square, taking in the lively energy of acrobats, musicians, storytellers, and open-air food stalls.

Day 9: Marrakech = Chichaoua = Argan Oil Cooperative = Essaouira

Leave the bustling streets of Marrakech and head west toward the Atlantic coast across the vast plains of the Haouz. Pass through Chichaoua and enter the Argan forest region, unique to southwestern Morocco. Stop along the way to observe the famous “tree-climbing goats” feeding on Argan fruit and visit an authentic women-led Argan oil cooperative to learn how this precious oil is handcrafted for culinary and cosmetic uses. Continue to the breezy, blue-and-white coastal town of Essaouira (formerly Mogador). Check into your Riad, walk through the historic fishing harbor, and sample fresh grilled seafood right by the Atlantic waters.

Day 10: Full Day in Essaouira "Coastal Relaxation"

Enjoy a relaxing day at your own pace exploring this laid-back, UNESCO-listed coastal gem. Walk along the historic 18th-century stone ramparts (Skala de la Ville) overlooking the ocean, where historic European cannons still point out to sea. Wander through the pedestrian-friendly, white-walled Medina filled with art galleries, thuya woodcraft workshops, boutique shops, and bohemian cafes. You can spend the afternoon taking a long walk along the sweeping sandy beach, trying water sports like kite-surfing or windsurfing, riding horses along the shoreline, or simply unwinding while watching the sunset over the Atlantic.

Day 11: Essaouira = Marrakech "Return Journey"

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast by the ocean and take advantage of your final morning in Essaouira for last-minute shopping, photography, or relaxing at a seafront cafe. In the early afternoon, meet your driver for the comfortable drive back to Marrakech. Upon arrival in the Red City, spend your final evening enjoying an authentic Moroccan dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa, visiting a traditional hammam spa for relaxation, or picking up souvenirs in the vibrant night market.

Day 12: Marrakech = Airport Transfer

Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy breakfast at your Riad and spend any remaining hours exploring local markets or enjoying a final cup of mint tea. Your private driver will pick you up from your accommodation and transfer you to Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) in ample time for your departure flight, marking the end of your 12-day Moroccan journey.
